BARRIERS TO WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Overcoming Barriers on the Journey to Health

Everyone faces certain barriers on their path to becoming a healthier version of themselves.

Types of Barriers:

  1. Direct Barriers: These are things that directly interfere with adopting health-promoting behaviors, such as eating healthy.

  2. Indirect Barriers: These interfere by decreasing commitment to the plan or by making it harder to change old habits.

  3. Perceived Barriers: These are based on thoughts or feelings rather than real obstacles (e.g., health conditions or physical limitations).

Common Barriers:

  • Time

  • Fatigue

  • Stress

  • Lack of motivation

  • Lack of support

  • Lack of knowledge

  • Illness

  • Self-esteem/confidence

  • Enjoyment

  • Environmental factors (e.g., lack of access to healthy foods or exercise facilities at work)

The Key to Overcoming Barriers: WILLPOWER

The most important attribute of people who successfully achieve health goals despite barriers is willpower. One of the biggest barriers to change is outcome expectancy—the belief that results should come quickly. When these high expectations aren’t met fast enough, motivation tends to drop.

How We Overcome Barriers in Weight Management:

As Weight Management Practitioners, we use three main approaches to individualize solutions for overcoming barriers:

  1. Interactive Programming

  2. Goal Setting

  3. Self-Care Skill Development
